I’ve spent a good deal of time now at Espresso Love, a coffee shop in my home town of Edgartown, pretending to work on writing and editing. The reality is that I got all my copyediting for Blast out of the way this morning at Mocha Motts in Vineyard Haven, and I’ve spent the majority of my time here feeding the birds with crumbs from my muffin. The ice in my coffee has melted, and the pool of water that condensated on the plastic cup is almost all evaporated, and I’m writing this in hopes it’ll kickstart my brain into writing what I need to write about.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what I want to do once I finally graduate, and Ivona and I discussed it yesterday. We’re both feeling like this past winter, during which we got into such boring routines, is not how we envisioned these years of our lives and the first years of our marriage. Yes, we’re intensely happy together, but there’s more to life that we feel we’re missing out on.

So, with that in mind, I’m considering renewing my plans of spending a summer riding a bike around the country, camping out along the way. The plan is to go hashing as many places as we can along the way, and I can’t think of anything better to do to make me feel like I’m alive again. I think the last time I really felt that way was in France.

Anyway, whatever I decide to do next, I know it has to be a big change. Any suggestions?

So after two years of wanting one, I finally broke down and bought the iPhone, and I chose a good time for it. My 3G S preorder arrived yesterday and I’ve probably changed my pants three times already in about 12 hours.

I’ve been spending most of my time acquainting myself with the various apps (all the free ones so far), like this excellent WordPress app, and I’m having a blast. The 3G S is noticeably faster than it’s predecessor and the video camera rocks. I’ve heard complaints about the voice control, and it’s definitely not flawless, but I found that if I try to think and speak like a machine it does a pretty good job of coming up with the right person, even with fairly complicated names.

Anyway, I’m psyched to have this for the cab this summer, as I can get some work done without dragging around my laptop.

Anyone have any app recommendations?

On account of posting three times yesterday and that it’s almost midnight on Sunday and I have a crazy day tomorrow, I’m going to do a real short post just to throw up a picture I found while looking around on Facebook today. I haven’t posted a single picture before now, which is sort of sad, and in the coming days I’ll post more. Ultimately, I want to get a really nice camera (I know, mom, you bought me one a couple years ago but it has a problem with the lens that might be more expensive than it’s worth to fix) and start teaching myself a bit more about being a good photographer. Then I’ll do a daily photo or something.

Anyway, this is a picture from a New Year’s Eve party a few years ago… maybe sophomore year of college? I guess it’s fitting to post this since I’m posting writing from around that time. It also happens to be a picture of me that I like, which is pretty hard to find. These are all people I went to high school with, most notably my friend David Linfield, who I later visited in Scotland and who remains a good friend. The best part is that there were two people taking pictures and we looked at the wrong camera, but I think it turned out better that way. I’m the guy on the right, for those who don’t know, wearing the black fleece with the Heineken in my hand.

On the one hand, you have a day dedicated to mutual love and intimacy (forget all the corporate-manufactured not-a-real-holiday crap for a minute). Then follow that up with a day that exemplefies the greatest disappointment of all humanity. And, even better, this year it’s followed by President’s Day. It’s like a tour of our society’s low and high points, with everything else in-between.

Happy birthday, pal! One more year of mediocrity under your belt before you die!

She went and got sushi from the Teapot in Northampton, lit candles everywhere and made dirty martinis. That’s about as intimate as I’m going to get with the details, though, so don’t get your hopes up.

After dinner, we watched Jerry Maguire. I’m surprised I hadn’t seen it before now. It’s weird to watch anything with Tom Cruise in it, because he seems so normal, but behind it all I’m thinking the whole time about how much of a crazy scientologist he is.

Ah… I got nothing. I have the next two days off, so hopefully I’ll get something substantive and not so “last-minute-so-the-bums-don’t-take-my-five-dollars.”

One idea I’ve been kicking around lately is what I want to use this site for… not just the blog specifically, but I get unlimited data transfer and storage from Bluehost.com for a pretty low price. Aside from wanting this blog to be popular and rewarding for me, I think it would be great to foster a sort of community of friends, and friends of friends, from all parts of my life. I’d love to have my links section full of people I know, whose thoughts and ideas would be a click away. Part of it is because I’ve grown apart from a lot of my friends. To be honest, I’ve been disappointed with a lot of them and their lack of ability or interest to keep in touch and communicate. Maybe this could help old friends stay close.

Maybe this won’t go anywhere, but I’d like to invite anyone who wants to to host a blog, or website for whatever they want, here, and join in this sort of community I’m thinking about putting together. Who knows, it might take off. And if nothing else, it’ll give me more shit to read and procrastinate from getting any real work done. If you’re interested, drop me a line at drew@riverhed.com. It doesn’t matter if you barely know me; if you want to do it, let me know.

In other news, Ivona and I watched Rushmore tonight. We watched the Darjeeling Limited a couple weeks ago and Ivona decided she wanted to see more Wes Anderson films, and I was happy to oblige. So we’re working our way through them, or at least the ones I’ve seen (all but one; I think his first). I remember watching Rushmore for the first time and absolutely loving it, and the music still stands out to me as one of the great things about it. It’s encouraging to see how Anderson has maintained and developed his sense of style, even to the point that watching this again I just wasn’t as amused and entertained as I had been bef0re. It almost felt like a B-quality performance compared to his newer stuff. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great movie, but it just didn’t grip me the same way it did before. Maybe I’ve seen it too many times, or because it’s a naturally depressing kind of movie.

Anyone read any good books or seen any good movies lately? I’m craving non-academic culture to balance my 27-credit workload.

I had a good day, and I guess I’ll leave it at that. Enjoyed my classes, got a letter of recommendation from a professor I respect that was better than I could have imagined, came home and made French onion soup and fudge with the wife and finally got around to watching the first episode of The Wire. Ivona didn’t like it because it’s not fun (she loves Entourage and the Sopranos because they’re fun shows, but The Wire is a little too serious for her I guess).

That’s about it, I guess. Nothing earth-shatteringly amazing, but an all-around good day. But let’s be honest, I just posted so none of you vultures will ask for money.
